World Mastercard Fashion Week Opening Night: Kicking off the Spring/Summer 2014 Season with Mikhael Kale

Last night I attended the Mikhael Kale Fashion Show in Toronto with two of my favourite bloggers, Dee and Jenelle. Canadian designer Mikhael Kale kicked off World MasterCard Fashion Week with his collection of modern & sleek separates for the Spring & Summer 2014 season. The collection was inspired by artist Mary Reid’s geometrically rendered portraits and featured angles, lines and shading. The collection was very modern and included colourful cutouts, cool moto jackets and even leather! 

Mikhael Kale studied at London’s Central Saint Martins and later went on to work in Milan for labels such as Antonio Marras and Bally. He started his own label in 2007 and has since been featured in The New York Times Style Magazine, WWD and Nylon and has dressed celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Sienna Miller and Beyoncé.

“The collection is youthful and young-minded, but not young; it’s directional. It’s all about technique; the collection needed to go super modern. It’s very streamlined, not simple, but tightly edited,” said Kale. “The result is a method we created that utilizes a leather padding technique that bonds mirrored shapes. Like many of my collections, Spring/Summer 2014 is a culmination of technique, shape and a styling direction
I got to go behind the scenes before the models hit the catwalk to talk to some of the people responsible for the finished beauty look. The models hair was done by Redken’s team of professional stylists, lead by Cynthia Duplantis. Hair was kept down, sleeked back and tucked behind the ears. Grace Lee (lead Makeup Artist for Maybelline New York) kept the overall makeup look simple yet modern and the super talented Rita Remark designed the almond-shaped nail look that the models were sporting which included a base of Essie’s Sand Tropez and a asymmetrical stripe using Essie’s Good as Gold. World Mastercard Fashion Week is Canada’s leading fashion event (it happens twice a year) and focuses on propelling Canadian designers to the forefront of the global fashion arena. Both established and emerging designers take the stage in front of an audience made up of international media and industry professionals to debut their newest collections.
