When I first laid eyes on the L’Oreal Color Riche Caresse Shine Stains back in November at L’Oreal Paris‘ Spring Product Launch & Holiday Party, my initial impression of these gems was obvious….they had an uncanny resemblance to the Yves Saint Laurent’s Rouge Pur Couture VERNIS À LÈVRES Glossy Stains. After comparing both products, I can certainly confirm that these are great dupes of YSL’s higher priced lip stain. Not a surprise since L’Oreal is YSL’s parent company after all. This review, however will focus solely on the Loreal Shine Stains.

Packaging:
The packaging of these is very classy and sleek. The gold tube has a small peek-through window directly underneath the cap, which shows the stain colour and makes finding the color you want to wear easy when sifting through your collection. There is a clear sticker indicating the shade name & number on the cap as well (see photos below).
Formula & Pigmentation:
Aside from the basic concept of these and their packaging, the formulation of the L’Oreal stains is also quite comparable to YSL. Some of the L’Oreal shades are more sheer in comparison, however this is only the case with the lighter, more sheer ones. Most of the range (mainly the darker options) overs opaque/bold coverage. Basically, coverage depends on the shade you choose and the color of your natural lips. Applying a single layer of one of the lighter shades may not be too noticeable but one layer of one of the medium to darker shades is more than sufficient. Regardless of how many layers of this product you apply, these all leave behind a beautiful & noticeable stain on the lips. If you have very pigmented lips, I would avoid the nude or light pink options and stick with the darker colours.
Application:
The applicator is a tear drop shape with a pointed tip and a flat side, which makes applying these very easy. These lip colours apply like lip gloss, but dry to a stain which I found lasted over three hours. Consisting of over 30% water, the texture is very lightweight and hydrating. It doesn’t feel heavy on the lips at all. I did find these to go on glossy but over time and with continued wear, some of the glossiness disappeared and more of a sheen/semi-matte finish remained. Applying additional coats not only intensifies the stain colour but also provides more glossiness and shine. This is one example of “less not equalling more”, so don’t be scared to apply additional layers of this product.
