Maybe You’re Born with It?: Backstage with Maybelline 2013

What happens backstage at Fashion Week is truly magical. With hairstylists, makeup artists, nail artists and models all in the same room, there is no shortage of skills and talent. This year, I got to hang out in the VIP Media lounge and interview Grace Lee, lead makeup artist for Maybelline New York. Keep reading to learn more about the look she created for the Soia & Kyo show.

It was all about “Urban Sophistication”, for the Soia & Kyo show with hair polished & pulled back and models sporting natural, fresh-faced, ultra dewy skin. Grace Lee played on the designer’s vision and wanted the models to look as though they were barely wearing any makeup at all. “We wanted bold brows, dewy skin… healthy and gorgeous” said Grace.

Maybelline New York products used to create the Soia & Kyo beauty look:
  • FitMe! Foundation
  • Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Spot Concealer + Treatment
  • FitMe! Powder
  • Master Shape Brow Pencil (I love this product!)
  • Dream Bouncy Blush in Coffee Cake Dream
  • Dream Bouncy Blush in Peach Satin Dream
  • FitMe! Foundation (dark shade to contour)
  • Baby Lips Moisturizing Balm in Quenched (to highlight!)
  • Color Whisper by Color Sensational in Some Like it Taupe

Grace filled in the brow with master shape pencil then brushed them through using Great Lash Mascara in Clear. She coated the eyelashes on top using the new “Big Eyes Mascara” – a dual-ended mascara not yet released. For a natural looking nude lip, she chose Color Whisper in Some Like it Taupe and to “highlight” and complete the look she used Baby Lips lip balm to make the model’s skin look dewy – she applied it under the brow, on the cheeks, on the bridge of the nose and even the chin!
