Garnier Canada recognizes the impact that the consumption of beauty products has on the environment so they’ve teamed up with TerraCycle to do something about it and take initiative on behalf of the entire beauty industry.
Last week, I visited the TerraCycle office in Toronto to learn more about this exciting partnership and what we can all do to take part. A Beauty Brigade is a waste management program aimed at eliminating the idea of waste and encouraging consumers to creative solution systems instead. It’s effortless and free to participate. All you need to do is collect your household beauty waste (i.e. empty bottles of hair care, skincare tubes, lipstick cases etc). Once you have enough packaging to fill up a collection box, simply download a pre-paid postage label from TerraCycle.ca to arrange shipping with UPS. Garnier & TerraCycle accept ALL beauty products, regardless of brand and will still provide funding to recycle that item. Garnier also has all the shipping charges covered and the Beauty Brigade will award $0.02 per item to a charity, non-profit organization or school of your choice! Within the year, the Beauty Brigade has collected more than 1.3 million units of waste worldwide! Isn’t that fantastic?!!

Everything in the TerraCycle office was made from waste and had been “upcycled” (taking a piece of waste and repurposing it) into something useful. Overhead lights were made from old CD’s and shampoo bottles, beverage crates were used as wall dividers and there was even a cute duffle bag which was created using old juice packages All of those items would have ended up in our landfills so it was really inspiring to say the least! With the Beauty Brigade, what was once a shampoo bottle could now be a park bench, a fence or a tote bag.

We all had the opportunity to try upcycling ourselves. Some people turned shampoo labels into gorgeous gift bows (Jessica must have made at least 10!), while others made desk organizers, light fixtures and even jewelry! Take a look…..
