Dermalogica has been around for 25 years and in my opinion, its one of the best skincare brands available for a variety of different skin types. I was first introduced to the brand when it was used on my skin for a facial back in 2011 and I have been hooked on their incredible products ever since.
My skin has always been relatively normal but as I age, it has started to present with some issues. (i.e. hyper-pigmentation, age spots, fine lines, dullness). I am also starting to notice the plumpness in my face disappearing, which is leaving me looking a little gaunt. I’ve heard fillers are pretty much the only solution for this, so I googled ‘what are fillers‘ and was pleasantly surprised by the results they promise. I’ve booked myself in for a consulation after which I’ll decide whether or not to go through with it. Luckily, there are plenty of non-invasive lotions and potions available to help with the surface issues. Even though my skin is not sensitive by definition, I really like the Ultra Calming range as it does the best job of reducing the redness on my skin and keeping my skin looking its best. For moisturizer, I’ve been combining the Barrier Cream and the UltracalmingTM Serum Concentrate. The Barrier Cream was a tad heavy on my skin on its own, so mixing the two (at the recommendation of a Dermalogica educator) works best for me. I also really like the Microfoliant, a gentle, daily-use exfoliator that combats dullness and brightens the complexion.
I have recently introduced Dermalogica’s new Multivitamin Power Serum from the Age Smart range to my routine. It uses micro-encapsulated vitamins to penetrate deep into skin damage and claims to decrease fine lines and age spots, increase skin recovery and defend against skin aging. The key ingredient Hydroxpinacolone Retinoate (HPR), is a more “skin-friendly” version of Vitamin A….a retinoid that has proven efficacy in reducing the appearance of fine lines/wrinkles. “HPR readily stimulates cell-turnover and is able to intercept the earliest signs of aging, including sun-damaged skin.”

This new serum is rich in vitamins A, C, E and F which assist in reducing hyper- pigmentation and ensuring a smoother skin surface. The one thing that is a bit strange about this product is that it doesn’t have the texture and consistency that you would expect from a serum. Rather, the anti-oxidant rich formula has a cream-like texture.
It is recommended that the “serum” be applied after your toner and before your regular moisturizer. All you need is the smallest amount of product, as a little pea-sized amount goes a long way. It’s formulated without any artificial fragrances and colours, but this product does have a lemony-scent to it….just something to be aware of if you happen to sensitive to fragrances. I personally like how quickly this product absorbs into the skin and that it apparently penetrates deeply to reach areas right where its needed most. I’m hoping it’s doing wonders underneath the skin surface! I haven’t been using this product long enough to comment on its overall efficacy but I will say that already some of my pigmented areas have started to fade. I’ve also noticed that my complexion is much brighter and my pores look slightly reduced in size. I can’t say that this product alone is the reason I’ve been noticing results, but I’m sure that it’s a contributing factor along with some of the other products currently in my skin care regime and of course my trusted Clarisonic device.
