WMCFW S/S 2014: Fashion & Beauty Recap Plus Some of My Favourite Shows

I recently hung out backstage and caught a few shows at World Mastercard Fashion Week in Toronto. Veteran designers like Stephen Caras, Joe Fresh, Pink Tartan and Bustle as well as newcomers like Hilary MacMillan, JNBY and Target delivered a range of must-see runway shows featuring the best in Canadian fashion. Getting to see some of the actual fashion shows was great and being backstage was even more memorable. It was my second season attending and seeing what goes on behind the scenes truly makes you appreciate all of the long hours and preparation that happens before the models hit the runway. I also had the privilege of interviewing Maybelline’s lead makeup artist Grace LeeEssie’s lead nail artist Rita Remark and Redken’s lead stylist Jorge Joao. Each of them walked me through the beauty, nail and hair trends they created through their collaborative efforts with the shows fashion designers.

SOIA & KYO

While I was not overly enthusiastic about the clothing for this show, I did really like the trench coats! I also loved the nail look for Soia & Kyo, which was created by the gorgeous Rita Remark. Her ice cream inspired matte & pastel nails were a huge hit and were achieved by layering Ballet Slippers and Matte About You over either 1) Barefoot & Topless 2) Figi or 3) Sand Tropez (see photo below). All polishes were by Essie.

One of my favourite hair looks of the week was Redken’s “Greek Goddess” look for the Stephen Caras show. The hair was back-combed and loosely braided to the side. It was just beautiful! Jorge Joao and his team of stylists created the look by running Redkens’ Signature Looks Ruffle Up 14 through clean, textured hair and then back-combing the sides and fringe. The hair was then brushed softly away from the face, with both sides twisted back and secured with bobby pins. The look came together by adding a gorgeous loose braid that fell to the side. Other products used for this look included Fashion Work 12 & Shine Flash 02….both by Redken.

Pretty soon, I’ll be sharing swatches of the new Maybelline Color Sensational Color Elixir with you, which I predict will be this years hottest and most coveted beauty item! So stay tuned! In the meantime, I am always amazed at the creative looks that Grace Lee comes up with backstage. The looks for the shows ranged this season from simple to colourful but here were some of my favourites…

For the Rudsak show, the models looked very pretty and feminine. A bold cat eye (achieved using Maybelline’s Master Precise Liner) was perfectly paired with light, rosy pink lips and cheeks. Simple but fab!

Rudsak also happens to be one of the shows I get the most excited about every season. I always seem to appreciate their edgy vibe and all the leather! See below for some of my favourite looks from the Spring/Summer 2014 Collection. Although I loved it all, I will not be sporting the mesh one piece dress below.

I already dedicated a whole post to Target’s inaugural show at WMCFW but that post focused mainly on Target’s upcoming fashion trends. The beauty look for Target was also a standout for me and one that I immediately wanted to replicate.

Get the Look:
Create a subtle, shimmery smoky eye by lining the upper lashes with Maybelline New York Master Smoky Longwearing Shadow-Pencil, smudging it up slightly with the pencil’s sponge tool. Swipe Maybelline New York EyeStudio Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Gel Shadow in Bad to the Bronze across the entire eyelid for a simple shiny finish. Flesh toned lips top off this holiday classic look!

The beauty look for Melissa Nepton was also a great one….not as easily wearable as the others but fabulous in itself. It was colourful, bright and artistic. The spring-inspired yellow lids complemented the pink all over the face. Grace Lee and her team created a different take on blush, which drew even more attention to the eyes.

Get The Look:
Dab Maybelline New York EyeStudio Color Tattoo Pure Pigments Loose Powder Shadow in Wild Gold into the inner corners of the eye and Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Gel Shadow in Fierce n’ Tangy onto the centre of the eyelid. Apply the Pure Pigments Loose Powder Shadow in Pink Rebel in a c-shape along the temple, much like you would apply a bronzer or highlight. Add mascara to the top and bottom lashes to complete the look

I had another incredible season backstage and have been so inspired to replicate some of the beauty, nail, hair and fashion trends that I saw at WMCFW for Spring/Summer 2014. Although I could not possibly write about each and every show, I do encourage you to check out the World MasterCard Fashion Week website here to learn more about the designers in attendance. There was SO much talent under one roof, it was pretty overwhelming.

Until next time beauties!
